Medical Grade Chitosan

Akina, Inc. through a partnership with Regen Biotech Inc., is proud to distribute medical grade chitosan products.  These products have carefully controlled acetylation to have desired properties.  The chitosan sold is acceptable for medical use and is compliant with ISO 10993.  The degree of deacetylation and molecular weight has been fully verified by ASTM F2260 - 03(2008)and ASTM F2602 - 08e1respectively so the chitosan you purchase has the exact properties described in the specifications.

Chitosan is a linear polysaccharide composed of randomly distributed β-(1-4)-linked D-glucosamine (deacetylated unit) and N-acetyl-D-glucosamine (acetylated unit).   This natural polymer derived from crabshells and shrimp can have its properties, most notably water solubility, adjusted by controlling the number and order of acetylated units (marked in green below) and deacetyleated units (marked in blue below).

In addition to traditional deacetylated chitosan, we also provide reacetylated chitosan.  This allows for the acetylated portions to be carefully controlled yielding either block or random acetylation which creates chitosan products with either better water solubility or those which behave in a crosslinked manner.
